What Is Tailgating?
Tailgating occurs when an unauthorized person gains physical access to a restricted area by following an authorized individual through a secured entrance. Certification exams may present a person carrying equipment, claiming to have forgotten a badge, or entering behind an employee and ask candidates to identify the physical social-engineering technique. Once inside, the intruder may access unattended workstations, network ports, documents, equipment rooms, or removable media. Controls include security guards, badge readers, access vestibules, visitor registration, surveillance, visible identification, and employee awareness. Authorized personnel should avoid holding secured doors open for unknown individuals, direct visitors to the proper check-in location, and report suspicious behavior without creating an unsafe confrontation. Investigators may review access logs, camera footage, visitor records, and device activity to determine what the intruder reached.
